Sarah began her musical career as a clarinetist in elementary school but through high school and college expanded her instrumental repertoire to include the saxophone, violin, and percussion. She studied and performed under Dr. Keith Preston, Michael Sullivan, Dr. Stephen Hemphill and Dan Smithiger. During her 24 years of instructing marching bands and indoor percussion ensembles in Arizona, Kansas, and Idaho, she has had the honor of working with and learning from great band directors including Dr. Keith Preston, Sharon Woodard, Ed Protzman, and Jason Bull.
While living in Arizona, Sarah, along with her husband Jason, started a scholastic indoor drumline, Centennial Indoor Percussion Theater which performed for two seasons. After moving to Idaho, she served as Assistant Director and Administrator for Troopercussion Indoor for 3 years and has been the Co-Director of North Star Independent since 20 17. This past year, she took North Star Independent to WGI World Championships where the ensemble earned a top 10 finish in the Independent A division.
Sarah strives to promote music education and hopes to build the marching arts in southeast Idaho. To accomplish this goal, she has served on the Board of Directors for Snake River Youth Performing Arts, North Star’s parent organization, since its beginning in 2017. She also currently serves as President on the Board of Directors for the Intermountain Percussion Association in Utah, and has been an active Board member since 2014.
When she is not working with music ensembles, Sarah is a full-time science teacher of 17 years. She is a mother of three kids and 2 dogs.
