Shelbie Jenkins Romriell

Front Ensemble Instructor

Shelbie Jenkins Romriell is a mom of 2 young children and is part of the front ensemble instructional staff for North Star Independent.

Shelbie grew up in Lyman (just south of Rexburg) Idaho in a musical family, often singing with her mother in church choir. And with older siblings in band, she chose to start out in middle school band herself on clarinet. It wasn't long before she chose to learn saxophone on her own at home as well, and to cherish the opportunity for summertime piano lessons in Jr High.

Growing up Shelbie excelled on clarinet and saxophone, even though Shelbie did not bring her love of saxophone playing to school with her until marching band as a freshman. She played clarinet in school concert bands and participated in the local summer marching band on clarinet and saxophone from the time she was in middle school until she moved away for college.

Through her high school years, Shelbie honed her skills on clarinet and saxophone. She did this through concert band and wind ensembles, marching band, jazz band, participation in live pit orchestras for Madison High School musicals and summer musicals through Rexburg Community Theater, performing in varying honor bands in South East Idaho on clarinet and alto saxophone, and competing for state solo on alto. Needless to say, Shelbie spent a lot of time practicing.

Shelbie formally continued to pursue music throughout college as well. She attended college at Idaho State University as a music education major with clarinet as her declared primary instrument. She continued to pursue saxophone as well in marching band, jazz band, saxophone quartets and other small ensembles. Shelbie was principal clarinetist in the wind ensemble during her final semesters of college, graduating in the summer of 2023.

Shelbie also pursued skills on additional instruments including concert/auxiliary and mallet percussion in high school, where she assisted with auxiliary/concert percussion for visiting musical artists, in concert band, and in some summer musicals as well. She also participated in indoor drumline with Troopercussion Indoor for 2 years on vibraphone and North Star Independent for another 2 years on vibraphone and marimba.

During college Shelbie also had additional opportunities to utilize her skills in percussion through her selection to participate in recording ensembles of 2 new compositions.

Currently, Shelbie teaches private lessons and performs as opportunity permits, works with composer friends on their amazing projects, occasionally substitute teaches, and helps to teach the front ensemble of North Star Independent.

Shelbie joined North Star Independent's instructional staff in Fall of 2021 and enjoys rubbing shoulders with the staff and participants she gets to know there year by year. And though she is a young mom, Shelbie hopes to continue as NSI staff for seasons to come.
